Why Are All the Best Bloggers Weirdo Nerds
I had a friend right after high school…actually he was a friend of a friend. At first I absolutely hated him. Frankly, he was probably the most uncool kid in school and things weren’t looking so bright afterwards either. His name was Scott.
To be perfectly honest, he is still probably the weirdest guy I have ever met. He lived primarily on potted meat and chocolate milk, had an affinity for fat chicks (along with fat chick porn that was stashed out in the open in his bathroom…which he had no problem telling people what he did with them), loved 50’s music in a time when grunge was the buzzword.
He had no style whatsoever and wore glasses that looked like his grandmother had picked them out…..when he was 8. No joke, the guy was about as uncool as it gets.
The only reason why I was even acquainted with the guy was because he was my guitarist’s roommate. What can I say? As an up and coming “rock star” in my area, the last thing I wanted was this guy to taint my image with his bold references to fat girl porn (did I mention that he had no problem blurting out the fact that he spent ‘quality time’ in the bathroom with his porn mags?) and his infatuation with potted meat (I mean, come on…he could in the very least like SPAM…at least SPAM retains a small level of cool chic).
I hated the guy for probably a year. He offended my mind and sensibilities. He took what I thought cool was and turned it on its ugly head. After a while though, he kind of stuck on me and his quirks became the things that made Scott, Scott. In essence, Scott quirks made him cool.
In fact, looking back on it…I would have to say that Scott was weird…sure…but he was far cooler than me, because he didn’t realize that his coolness factor was so low. It didn’t bother him that whatever he said or did could potential unravel those of us who were restrained by our “world of cool”
So what does this have to do with blogging?
Most of the successful bloggers that have made a name for themselves have managed to stand apart from the crowd. Some have done it with hard work. The big time players all have a personality that makes them genuine (I am not talking about the Darren Rouse’s of the world who not only are not cool but are about as exciting to read as watching paint dry).
Let’s be frank here….there are only so many ‘top 10 lists’ you can make….there are only so many tutorials on ‘how to make money with squidoo’…most niches have those things tied up with a bow on it.
So, if you can find whatever you are looking at whenever you google, then what is the point of following other bloggers?
The answer is personality. And if you aren’t giving your people a little taste of your personality with all of its quirks and social dysfunctions, then chances are your blog is going to blend in with the landscape of all the other blogs out there that are just trying to be cool…..
The best bloggers aren’t cool…the best bloggers don’t really blend in….the best bloggers have their own unique style that makes people gravitate to them….they are weird in a kind of car crash cool kind of way.
In fact, if you were ever lucky enough to sit at the “cool” kids table in the high school cafeteria, then chances are you probably chunked spit wads at the people that you are now so trying to be like now. I have yet to meet a blogger that I thought was cool in the traditional sense. To put it kindly, they have all been weirdo geeks (which is why I love to read their stuff, by the way).
So the next time you are planning on writing your top 10 list that has been done for the 500th time by other bloggers on the internet, think about what is it that makes your voice unique to others. Do you have any quirks and dysfunctions that you can parade around for all to gawk at or be offended by?

Leo, great site. I'm not sure I'm weird enough to be a top blogger. But I definitely was not one of the cool kids in high school. (Wow, that was a long time ago.) Well, actually I did gain a little coolness my when my band played for my Sophomore banquet (Beatles, Beach Boys, Top 40). I never traveled with a band eating peanut butter sandwiches though.
I really like your approach of writing one high-quality, lengthy post per week. That's what I plan to do with my new blog. For the past 2.5 years I've been writing and posting fiction on my other website, RobertBurtonRobinson.com using Wordpress software. It now has three novels, two novellas and a dozen short stories. Unfortunately it produces near zero income.
Now that I found you I will be following your posts here. Looking forward to it! Thanks.
Hi Robert…man, I appreciate the comment. The fact that you played the Beatles and Beach Boys makes you cool to me…
