Ifs, ands, and buts….

Excuses. That is what I see all the time. Things like I don’t have time to write content. Things like if only I knew ____(the secret that they think successful internet marketers are keeping to themselves), then I know I could make it online. Things like I need to learn more before I step out…things need to be perfect…
The reality is that every day that you don’t do something is another day wasted. And even if you can’t do much, even a little every day adds up. Let’s take a look at this closer….
Focus:
If you dedicated yourself to a full week’s worth of keyword research in a single market, you would probably be staring at more potential keywords and opportunities than if you were to simply do hit and run’s using google external tool every now and then on random markets. This is even if you invested 1 hour a day. Your chances of success would be significantly higher because you would have more time to drill deep into those keywords that most don’t find because they aren’t willing to go deep down into that rabbit hole.
Commitment:
If you committed yourself to one 500 word post each day for the keywords that you had mined from your 1 week of solid keyword research focus, you would have 365 pages by the end of the year. Because you are focusing on just one market, the articles will get easier and easier because you living, breathing and drinking that market. What would normally take 30 minutes suddenly becomes a 15 minute affair.
Patience:
If, instead of focusing on what’s not happening right now, you could have the confidence that the traffic will come, you could focus that energy where it needs to be focused on…connecting the right offer with the right conversation. If & when you have the confidence to constantly move forward and look back only every once in a while, you will get much further over the long haul.
Building is like meditation…you have to keep your head in the moment………………
Curiosity:
If, rather than relying on others who say or claim that they have the answers, you instead asked the question to yourself and forced yourself to find the answers, you may find a potential gold mine that no one knows about because they are simply playing follow the leader. Things like what happens when I string this website to that one? What happens when I start changing title tags to duplicate articles? What happens if I add anchor text that focuses on multiple keywords when the page is optimized for only one? When you start to do that, you start to learn a lot more than what most bloggers and webmasters can tell you.
In my last newsletter (if you are subscribed, you will definitely want to check your email), I briefly spoke about this and the potential to create “break-throughs” with syndicated content. I would never have figured this out had I listened to the majority of internet marketers out there. I tested it, my hypothesis was spot on, and as a result, I knew something that most marketers discounted because everyone told them they couldn’t.
Perseverance:
If you make mistakes, you either learn from your mistakes and could hone those mistakes into new powerful ideas, you would be one step closer to your goal….You will make mistakes. The big key isn’t that you make mistakes. It is how you react to them. When mistakes happen, a lot of marketers will look at them as though they need to start from scratch. They will look at their strategy, see it is flawed and move to the next strategy. What they miss is that sometimes a mistake is a yard away from some great idea. Sometimes, you just need to push through.
Just some food for thought for the day. If you find every sentence you are making is beginning with an if or ending with a but, then hopefully, this little blurb will get you up and running. We all want things right now. But when you are building things, the winners understand that making money online is a marathon, not a sprint. But in order to even have a chance to win the race, you have to start somewhere.
If you started today, you could have 365 pages that all ranked in the search engines for the keywords that you were hoping they would rank for.
If you started today, those 365 pages could be making $10+ a day…..
If you started today, that would be $3,650 per month in one year’s time with an hour a day of work…
Your race starts today……

Excellent inspirational post! I have tried to apply this approach in recent months, since I went full-time Internet Marketing, and it has yet to pay off, so I am really close to your message here – I am having to make myself “do stuff” each day. I’m having to apply “blind faith” to see me through until the results come. It’s one of the biggest tests of mental stamina and discipline that I’ve faced.
Btw. is it “…those 365 pages could be making $10+ a month each….”?
Hey Leo,
Great stuff as always…
Quick question… You’ve spoken of “drilling down” in regards to keyword research before. I think I know what you mean BUT wonder if you could expand on this thought a bit.
IF I understand you correctly, it means looking for longer tails that may be easier to rank for but still have decent search volume and CPC. You find these keywords by plugging in a keyword into the Google Keyword Tool and seeing what “related keywords” come up. You then do the same thing with these “related keywords” – using them as your new base keyword…AND so on AND so forth…
Is this kind of right?
Thanks!
yup, J…..I am the king of fubars….thanks for pointing it out
@ jeff,
That is one way….competitive intelligence is another (and the one I use more than the google keyword tool). Yanking keywords from a site is another. Using keyword scrapers is another. There are lots of ways to finding great keywords that are under the radar. But the fact is that it is very hard to do it if you are constantly in different markets. The more you know about a market and the conversations within the market, the better chances you have of finding them.
I had the situation a few years ago where I introduced a friend to the world of online marketing. I have them a “behind the scenes” tour of all my traffic stats, sales, and more so they could see for the first time what results are really possible online. Their eyes nearly popped out and they asked then and there if I would help them set up an online business of their own.
Of course I agreed. I taught them keyword research and niche investigation. They spent weeks trawling for ideas until they came up with one we were both happy with.
Then they did precisely nothing. For months. There was always an excuse. Then they got laid off their job.
I’m certain that if they had knuckled down, by the time they got laid off, they would have a profitable online business and there wouldn’t have been any stress. As it was, they *didn’t* have a business and being laid off turned into one of the most stressful situations I have seen.
All because of an excuse for not taking action.
Sooo true… That reminds me to to re-read your blog when you talked about focus and being organized. I think you should market that “system”
Just found about the news letter. When did it start? Subscribed!
Hard work pays off, if you stick to it. yep -> thanks for the inspiration. In the day to day grind, while you wait and work for the payoff, it is soooo easy to get distracted and accomplish nothing. So make achievable goals, like the ones you mention here, and then, as you say – stick with them! Thanks for the continuing inspiration all your posts on this site have brought me!
