Search Engine Optimization from the bottom up

Most Search engine marketers teach the SEO from the top up. Recently, I have been thinking that this is nothing more than a rabbit trail for the average webmaster. Why? Because, anyone who has been optimizing for the web and grabbing long tails as their primary keywords will tell you that finding an accurate traffic average is more of a guessing game than anything else. (anyone up for that street game, find the queen?)
In other words, a rabbit trail is nothing more than a huge waste of time for the niche marketer….
Which has got me to thinking….
Why do so many marketers teach niche marketing and micro niche marketing? Because it is easy?….
AND…. why not go after big markets? Why not go for the virtual jugular? If you are in the cigar niche, why not set your sites on “cigar” as your primary keyword?
This is a really typical example of siloing a site. Notice that I don’t inter-connect my articles to other articles but rather the hubs. Alternatively, my hubs link to my primary keyword. This is all and well and nice for my primary and seconday keywords from an internal link structure. But what about my articles for my long tails?
I am theorizing here but it really makes sense. What if rather than focusing my linking efforts on the big kahuna, mamma-jamma primary keyword and secondary keywords…I focused instead on the long tails that happen to also be linking to my secondary keywords that happen to be also linking to my primary keyword.
What would that would do, link juice wise? Would it boost my primary and secondary keywords as well as my long tails?
Would this be an effective way to immediately boost your traffic all the while you are optimizing for your main keywords?
And more importantly, wouldn’t you be able to grab some very juicy long tails this way for consistant traffic to your site?
Just thinking out loud here. Would love to hear some who agrees or disagrees.

Wow, I can’t believe no one has commented on this post. I know this post is over a here but just I’d share my thoughts
The theory that you just proposed of focusing on long tails in order to rank primary and secondary keywords is a sound one. In fact, I know Grizzly suggests to start off with a super keyword like “how to make money online for beginners”. He’s mentioned numerous times that the more long tails you rank for, it starts to increase your rankings for the secondary and primary keywords.
I’m still in the process of building micro niched adsense sites so I’m learning as much SEO as I can. Anyways, it’s been well over a year since you posted this. Would you care to share your thoughts on how well this method has worked for you?
Hey Hann,
Yeah, I wrote this wayyyy back when I think I was the only one reading my stuff, lol. It works. Simply works. The more complicated you do things, the more spreadsheets you need and generally speaking, the more “brain” work you have to put into it to stay organized. I wrote something a little more recently you may be interested but it is a little less simplistic…building 2nd tier sites are very important if your site isn’t strong enough to get natural links within what community your niche is in. Here’s the post…
Link Building Strategies from the Top Down
Hi Leo,
