Putting it all Together Now..25 things….

New internet marketers typically will start with stars in their eyes and believe that they can make money online doing very little work. After awhile (usually 2-6 months), they will reach a point where they either quit disenchanted or decide to push on despite the fact that they haven’t gotten anywhere even with “help” that the gurus offer. It is at this point where they start to figure out that they do need to work…the work can be hard or boring (or both) and the key is volume.
As Jay Abraham puts it, there are 3 people in this world:
- People that make things happen…
- People who watch things happen…
- People who things keep happening to…
Hopefully, the majority of my small readership can be comfortably placed in bullet #1.
This is a fairly quick post as I am neck deep in a new campaign (which is why I didn’t post last week) and is actually in response to a comment I got last post…
A niche site on a keyword targeted domain with 40 pages of unique keyword optimized content WILL rank in Google for even some short-tails without too much effort. For example if someone bought moleswartsskintags dot com (available BTW) and put 120 posts on it (40 for each on moles, warts and skin tags) it would garner a decent amount of search traffic that could be monetized with Adsense you would not share, or better yet an affiliate product. I don’t see how article for article this content would be better off being placed on a Hub, even for someone just starting out.
Once this site is created, I see great value in using Hubs, articles etc to broaden my reach, but I would have a hard time doing it the other way around.
I can truly understand the comment. But what they fail to realize is that someone just starting out isn’t going to have the patience to wait for the months for the website to age enough to get significant amounts of traffic.
PLUS, using a parasitic host will give the new marketer the best “education” in terms of how organic search works (and if they can’t get that, they are sunk).
PLUS, building backwards will give you immediate traffic, give you a better indication as to how much traffic the conversation is really getting, and show the new apprentice a few things that they may learn that will improve their chances of success….
PLUS, once they have all the content out there, they can start to do rewrites of the articles on the hubs (even using the same title tags as the hubs for a two-fer) and arrange it on their site that will give both the searcher and the search engines the best chance to discover relevant content.
PLUS, it will give them more time to build more content and discover more keywords that are converting….
At any rate, that’s how I see it. Now, I don’t necessarily do this all the time. But patience is something that I have an abundance of (thanks to a 2 year old)….
So, I have put together a list of things that you may or may not have discovered when using parasitic hosts…..
- You may or may not have discovered that going after highly competitive keywords alone can be a true test of patience and maybe not even worth going after in the first place….
- You may or may not have discovered that even if you rank for the highly competitive keywords, they simply don’t convert as well compared to their long tail counterparts that are easier to rank for….
- You may or may not have discovered how parasitic hosts such as ezine articles and hubpages will rank for these long tail keywords almost straight out of the box.
- You may or may not have discovered how cool traffic funnels are in relation to driving sales from these hosts to your “real” site…
- You may or may not have discovered how to use google analytics (or any analytical website script) to find more long tail keywords that people are using to find what they are looking for….
- You may or may not have discovered how using those newly discovered long tails from analytics and creating new pages will get you even more traffic.
- You may or may not have discovered that short articles focusing on particular long tail keywords will actually rank higher for the said keyword than a long article based on generalities.
- You may or may not have discovered that simply changing the title tag on a duplicated article and syndicating it on a website trusted by google will give you extra keyword funnel opportunities (and links).
- You may or may not have discovered that guest posting on a website that is trusted and then pushing links to that website is a faster way to move up the SERPS than getting a ton of low quality links; the same links that everyone else can get.
- You may or may not have discovered that guest posting also opens yourself up to networking and building powerful relationships that may be beneficial in the future.
- You may or may not have discovered that every page out there that you build can be utilized at a later date for funneling authority and juice….
- You may or may not have discovered that these pages also age very well, pretty quickly because of the authority and trust that the host has….
- You may or may not have discovered that you can also throw hundreds of low quality links (even thousands) without the fear of being deindexed or sandboxed.
- You may or may not have discovered that internet links matter more when the site the page is on is trusted…..
- You may or may not have discovered that volumes of content are more effective than smart content…..
- You may or may not have discovered that content on these parasitic hosts doesn’t necessarily have to be remarkable…it just has to be good enough….
- You may or may not have discovered that there are some very good linking opportunities on these parasitic hosts that will get you more traffic quickly…
- You may or may not have discovered how the amount of collective traffic you have going to ALL your pages is a pretty good indicator as to how much money you are making….
- You may or may not have discovered how watching google adsense for ads that are “sticking” is a good approach to looking for affiliate opportunities…
- You may or may not have discovered how 80% of your earnings come from around 20% of your pages…..
- You may or may not have discovered how interlinking your pages on sites that have trust make for a very powerful search engine motivator….
- You may or may not have discovered that the reason why most people moan and complain about earnings using these sites is simply a matter of not targeting the right keywords….
- You may or may not have discovered that there are some very quick ways to cheat keyword research by analyzing competition on other web 2.0 properties that give traffic data.
- You may or may have discovered that product placement is very important when you are having to share the space with other things like contextual ads when you are trying to make sales.
- You may or may not have noticed that analyzing tag data can be a great and easy way to generate more links and potentially “hot hubs” plus dominate conversations within the tags.
Now, I am not saying that any or all of these are true. But these are definitely things that you could probably discover as a potential for truth for you….if you were to open your eyes and test them for yourself. Besides, if they aren’t true, then you would know from tests that you actually did yourself rather than relying on someone who claims to know the truth….just something to chew on though…back to work for me…

I think Hubpages is really good – and a perfect place to test out theories and make a bit of Adsense $ on the side too. And posting to an established, trusted domain will work for totally unrelated keywords too.
I started on hubpages and knew nothing about keywords, backlinks, monetizing and at best an OK writer. I would say just reading other hubs, pick the ones that engage you and learn from them. It won’t take long to understand how to improve yourself.
One other thing happened(by accident)one of my hubs was picked up by the author of a Canadian Wikipedia site. It was a small reference in the body of the overall category, Cell Phones. Just one link back to the hub, that’s it. I didn’t even know the hub was picked up until traffic picked up one day and I discovered what happened. I know this doesn’t happen much, but the lesson was it can and that one backlink, from a strong site, reinforced the power of good backlinks.
As you mention, these properties are more than one dimensional.
@ Ric…I didn’t mention anything….I just said you may or may not discover a few things
And for those of us who toy around with theories and like to test to see how stuff reacts, web2.0 properties with trust and authority make for a great playground…..
Leo, I’ve been following your blog for quite a while now, and was about to try using article marketing to funnel traffic to a little self-improvement site I have and then put some Adsense on it.
But then I had a ‘duh’ moment. I’ve been disappointed that my free online novels site doesn’t draw more traffic (20,000 page views per month – 13 minutes per visit). I use it to promote my murder mystery print books and ebooks. If I can really get that traffic rolling, I could probably sell a lot more of my books.
So, I just wrote my first piece for EzineArticles: “Writing Murder Mystery Books – How to Hook the Reader from the Very First Page.” It should be live by tomorrow. I plan to write a series of at least eight to ten “Writing Murder Mystery” articles, and funnel all the traffic to my site.
Thanks again for all the great info!
Wow, Leo, this has given me a new insight into web 2.0 and as a result I intend to look at Hubpages and EzineArticles, which I contribute to almost daily, in a new light, because I have been missing the point somewhat.
Thanks,
Michael
Wow the truths above are very true! I agree hubpages is a good way to test the waters so to speak.
BTW, I like the green background
Thanks, paolo….I am still working on the “design” part of this site…it is obviously very low on my to do list…
There are too many people, myself included, who perhaps think that this MMO game should be spelled out for us, I see it all the time in the TKA forums. You posts make me think, and promote the requirement to test! Something I need to do more, when I have more traffic to analyze the stats.
I am interested about your comment regarding submitting the same article, but using different titles etc. To a noob like me, who has been told dupe content=bad, this is like dangling a carrot and I’m sure I’m not the first to ask more about this. However, I am nervous to try the approach for fear of doing something wrong and jeporadising my sites. The thought of saving time by submitting the same article to multiple places appeals (though I know that we can’t spend life just going for shortcuts). I guess I need to try this out for myself, but is there anything I need to be wary of before trying this technique and is it really just as simple as changing the title?
Also, how come you changed to the Frugal theme from Thesis?
Thanks Chris…
@ Chris
re: dup content
Think of it like this…5 or so years ago, people wrote for the article directories for the links. The links came because your content was syndicated. If enough people added your content (which was duplicate), then you would build links quickly. That is one benefit. There are a ton of places to syndicate your content that have page rank and authority…what you decide to do to bolster your rankings is up to you.
As far as fearing it will affect your websites, there shouldn’t be a problem long term. Google doesn’t penalize you for incoming links, at least not outright. Once again, test it yourself and see the effects. If it is beneficial, use it. If not, shelf it.
Re: changing the title and then syndicating- I can only attest to my testing but changing the title to target another long tail keyword and then syndicating it on websites that have authority and trust will almost always get that same article ranked, provided that the competition is not that intense. Mind you, don’t take my word for it though; test it out yourself.
I actually wrote about this with links showing proof that it worked in a newsletter a couple weeks ago.
Syndication isn’t a shortcut. It is just smart marketing, especially if your website is syndicated in places where the market congregates.
I even would go as far as I don’t care if there is a “nofollow” tag on the links if your goal is defined as building awareness that your website even exists.
re: frugal
I changed to frugal because it is more “user” friendly and the technical support is top notch. The developer, Eric Hamm, is constantly updating his theme to compete and he is freely available whenever I need him. Support is a big deal for me as I don’t care to spend a lot of time with technical crap and would rather spend it marketing.
Wow Leo, thanks for the prompt and detailed response and for the email. Much appreciated! I guess I answered my own question by saying us noobs need to test too. Will give it a try and see how I get one.
