How to get your site indexed quick in the Search Engines

In the forums, I see many people fretting over how to get indexed in the search engines. The most common questions are things like:
- How do I get indexed in Google?
- How do I get my site indexed?
- It has been two weeks and my pages still aren’t indexed.
This is a short article on how the search engines index pages….here are some basic rules for you:
- Google and other search engines don’t just randomly find pages.
- It is possible if you don’t do any web promotion at all and no one links to your site, then you could NOT be found.
- It is also possible to get indexed in a matter of minutes if you understand how the search engines work.
How the Search Engines Index pages
There are thousands and thousands of pages made everyday. Basically what a bot (such as a google bot) will do is it will enter a page, and then crawl through it. Without getting into search engine optimization, it is looking for two things….
- It wants to determine what the site is about.
- It want to find other links to travel through to find new places.
If you were to use this as an example, you would have to figure that in order for your site to get indexed, the quickest route would be to have links pointing to your site from other sites. It gets a little more complicated than that though.
- Google may spider the site where your link is infrequently if the site doesn’t make regular changes to it. In other words, if you want your site to get indexed quickly, you need to be ‘out there’, in terms of having a link to your site. More importantly, you need to place your links in places that the google spiders frequently.
Typically a search engine will find your site via other sites. In other words, if a site is linking to your site, you chances are the search engines will find you eventually.
If you link to a site that is vastly popular and that is constantly being updated, then your chances of getting spidered are even better.
The google spider has made it to your site…no what? How to get all of your pages indexed.
Well, in simple terms, the google bot will start to spider your site, looking for links that it can follow. This is primarily why a site map will help you get all your pages indexed. It is also a good reason to add internal links throughout your site pointing to all of your pages.
If you can build a good, sound page structure, the bot should be able to index all of your pages. And if they do that then….well, let’s just say you are at least in the race.
I know…I have kind of dumbed this down, but this is for beginners and rather than getting into the SEO side of things, I figured we should take this one step at a time. Most people don’t concern themselves with the what’s and why’s of getting indexed. They only concern themselves with the “how’s” and by doing this, they never can come to grips with how the search engines work. The important thing I hope you gain from this is how google indexes sites.
Of course, in the grand scheme of things, getting indexed is only the smallest of the small parts that you need to worry about. It is the SEO part that you need to concern yourself with.
